Bask in the glow

I need to play with Fantastical more, but I really miss Business Calendar 2 from my Android -> iPhone swap. It was perfectly customizeable so I could get the exact widget I wanted and then easily swap on/off calendars I wanted.

Sorry, you are too tall to ride this ride.

Moving to the iPhone feels really alien after so many years of vanilla Android Pixel phones.

It’s nice to be able to bring some of the niceties of “home” with me to the iPhone to help bridge the gap.

I’m sure I’ll come around to the keyboard but it feels really basic.

iPhone people, I need guidance

Having just bought iPhone 13s, I’m not sure exactly how the Magsafe charging works.

My wife has a magnetic mount in her car, with a metal plate in the case for her Pixel phone.

  1. Is the metal plate needed for magnetic car mounts or is phone strong enough?
  2. Does the metal plate inside the case prevent Magsafe charging from working?
  3. Should we replace the magnetic car mount with a magsafe one, is that the easiest answer?
  4. My house is covered in USB-C cables. Should I go all-in on Magsafe rather than buying piles of Lightning cables?

We had iPhones years ago and are moving back from the Google Pixel line… anything you wish you had known when you swapped? I’m half familiar with the Apple side of the pond (we have iPads and MacBooks) but hadn’t used the phones in a bit so I’m behind on the latest and greatest.

Trying not to spend ALL THE MONEY™ on new accessories Day One.

Who are airplanes designed for?

It’s not for someone 6'5". It’s not for someone a foot shorter.

These gentlemen decided to cool off under our trees in the back yard most of the day.

Peace Lilly in bloom this morning.

Some days need to start slow with a bunny munching greens in the yard.

Gold Finches are pure joy.

I forgot I was on PickleTok because I used to watch a women from Ukraine or something taste pickles. And I’m only watching this guy because he has a nice face.

—My wife, who has been sick (not Covid) for the past 5 days.

I saw three goldfinches in the back yard today. This fine fellow is from earlier this week as this morning’s trio were too quick to capture.

Seeing them is always a treat that brightens my day. It’s a job to play “is that a bird or a bloom?”

Podcast listening stats. In reply to @chrisjwilson’s post about listening stats

My listening has taken a huge hit in the past 18 months without much time in the car. I used to have a 60-90 minute commute each way. So I’ve spent many hours of quality audio time with podfriends.

What iPhone does The Large Handed buy in 2022?

Wife is getting latest SE model.

I’ve enjoyed the Google Pixel “a” line of cheaper phone. I don’t need a top of the line pocket computers.

I like photos and don’t have a plan with 5G. Going to stay with Google Fi as provider.

This albino rock pigeon has been hanging out in my neighborhood for a few days. I always see it at the same house.

We have plenty of mourning doves but rarely do we see pigeons. And even more rare to see a white one.

On the bird front, our bright yellow flowers have attracted Gold Finches! I could not be more pleased.

The #100DaysOfHomelab has sent me on a renewed path to figure out local DNS for my tinkering and I had a breakthrough tonight.

Setting up pihole with unbound for DNS plus nginx proxy manager gives me local DNS resolution inside my house. But not publicly accessible.

No more remembering which IP address and port which project is running on!

I wish I had somewhere in my house I could stash my homelab boxen where they would be out of earshot. But without a basement, extra room closet, or an attic that’s an appropriate temperature, they sit partialls near my living room router and in my office to make noise.

Running away to spend the weekend in Richmond, VA and see Bon Iver Sunday night.

[sinister music overlaid with jaunty big band music]

Questions I was not prepared for today:

How do we get someone from the International Space Station into Zoom with audio and video to present?

Super excited to see John Scalzi this weekend at the Gaithersburg (MD) Book Festival!

Less excited for the extreme heat warnings also scheduled for this weekend.

Once again, I find my job being completely different than what it was a couple of weeks ago. I’m still learning to be a Product Manager. Now I’m learning how to build, document and test APIs. And next up, I need to be a systems architect to continue building.
